Russia: Islamist Uprising Over, Nalchik Hostages Released

Nalchik183_113.jpgIn a news flash from one hour ago, the Russian news agency Interfax has reported that the uprising of Chechen Islamists in the city of Nalchik is finally over. The prime minister of Kabardino-Balkarian, Gennady Gubin, told the agency the news. He stated in Nalchik a sweep is still being taken throughout the city to locate any militants who may still be hiding. The hostages were taken from Number Three police station in the city, early in the raid. Yesterday President Vlasimir Putin ordered the entire city to be cordoned off, and gave "shoot to kill" instructions for anyone who refused to comply with searches.

Later, Western Resistance will be piecing together the information about the exact events of yesterday. Estimates of dead have ranged between 60 and 80, and various claims have been made as to the identity of the Islamist insurgents, though it is obvious they are involved with the Chechen militant groups. Whether or not they were connected with Shamil Basayev, the man held responsible for the slayings of Beslan in neighbouring North Ossetia, remains to be seen.
