India: Islamist Suicide Bomber Was a Woman

In a report from Associated Press, via Newsday.com a woman suicide attacker blew herself apart on a highway in Indian Kashmir, minutes before a military convoy was due to pass. Indian police have said there were no casualties other than the woman bomber, but a woman apparently representing Jaish-e-Mohammad claimed responsibility for the attack and said five soldiers were killed.

The female suicide attacker was, according to the militant "spokeswoman", called Haisa and was a member of the women's wing of Jaish-e-Mohammad. The call was made to a news agency in Srinigar.

The attack happened in the town of Awantipora, 20 miles south of Srinigar in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, and caused glass in several buildings nearby to be shattered. This is the first known case of a woman suicide bomber in the conflict in the region.

Mujtaba Ali Ahmad, the AP author of the article, stated that 66,000 people have died in the conflict between India and Pakistan over rights of sovereignty over the Kashmir region. Two wars have already been fought.
