UK: BBC Accused of Anti-Israeli Bias

The BBC has a remit to be "impartial", and sometimes this can lead to problems. Often when reporting on an issue, they drag in a representative of an opposing opinion on a news feature, just to make it seem "impartial". This can lead to stodgy viewing on current affairs issues.

Recently, the anti-semitic Muslim Council for Britain has had several swipes at the BBC while ostensibly decrying a Panorama documentary on Islamic groups and their reactions post 7/7. The most notorious feature of their complaining about the BBC derived from the claims of Inayat Bunglawala, from the MCB, who wrote a letter before the programme was aired, complaining it showed the BBC had a "pro-Israeli" bias, even though Israel was hardly mentioned in the programme (apart from its being a target of a UK suicide murderer). Is the BBC meant to be "anti-Israeli" in Bunglawala's bigoted world-view? Bunglawala further showed his antisemitism when he called Michael Green, the controller of the BBC a member of "the Tribe of Judah" and more recently contemptuously referred to people in the media as "friends of Israel".

Now, there are accusations that the BBC is "anti-Israeli", and in the documentary which provoked such statements, there may be some truth. On Monday 10, the BBC began a three-part series entitled "Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs", produced by Norma Percy. The first episode provoked a flood of letters from the British Jewish population, who normally tolerate most things in the media. Unfortunately I did not see the programme, as I was writing here, but a very good article can be found in the Jerusalem Post by Jerry Fisher. It is interesting, and the comments beneath are equally fascinating.

I like the BBC in general, but sometimes their coverage of Israeli/Palestinian issues is unashamedly bias in favour of the Palestinians. Maybe they need a wake-up call. They provided a link to the Jerusalem Post article on their website, probably as part of their remit to appear "impartial". I hope their current affairs editor takes some notice.
