Bangladesh: Islamist Prevented from Making Speech in Court
A report today from the Daily Star states that Mufti Abdul Hannan, believed to be a key figure in the Aug 17 serial bomb attacks which occurred throughout Bangladesh, was denied a chance to make any public speeches during his court submission.
Hannan was arrested last weekend on Oct 1 at Maddhya Badda in Dhaka. This was just before the series of bomb blasts at courthouses in Chittagong and Laxmipur, was in court in Dhaka, in completion of a ten day remand case, connected with the Aug 17 bomb that went off in Tejgaon. Detectives sought to have him remanded for a further ten days.
"The primary inquiry shows that he [Hannan] was involved in the blast. So, he needs to be placed on remand and interrogated further for information about others involved in the incident and their whereabouts," said the forwarding report submitted to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Dhaka.Hannan was offered the chance to make his submission to the court. Then the court inspector asked him to refrain from any political speech. In Hannan's submission, the accused stated:"I am a commoner, a madrasa student. I am not involved in the bomb blasts. I have been falsely implicated in the case for harassment."
He was given a further five day remand. As well as the current charge, he has four others against him. He is already sentenced to life imprisonment under the Arms Act, and also has another charge under the Explosive Substances Act. Both are these are filed with Gopalgang Police Station. He is on a sedition charge and another from Kotalpara Police Station for trying to assassinate former prime minister Sheikh Hasina by placing a 76 kilogram bomb at a venue planned for a meeting of the Awami League party on July 20, 2000.
