UK: Blair's Own Watchdog Says Rethink Terror Laws
The new laws against terrorism, announced recently by Charles Clarke and now in force, have had a rough ride, being criticised by the EU, politicians, former Law Lords, civil libertarians, and of course, Muslim groups, who as always feel discriminated against.
The latest individual to rail against these plans is Lord Carlile QC, who acts as an independent assessor of terrorism legislation. Carlile stated that the government has already violated the legal rights of several foreign nationals who are detained while awaiting their deportation to their countries of origin. Read the full article here, from The Scotsman. Carlile also criticised the three-month detention of terror suspects, included in the new bill.
In an update to the report that on Saturday, 10 people were arrested on harges related to the 2000 Terrorism Act, Newswatch reported that one of the men, who was taken from Derby, has now been released without charge.
