Russia Crisis: Putin Orders Nalchik to be Sealed Off

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has ordered a total blockade of the city of Nalchik in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the south of the nation, which today saw an armed insurgence from Islamist gunmen.

The attack by Islamist militants may have been the handiwork of Jaamat Yarmuk who have links with Chechnya, but is seems certain that those who attacked government buildings were Chechen supporters, according to Reuters, who reported that Putin ordered a ring of steel around the city, and gave orders to shoot to kill anyone who showed resistance.

"The president gave an instruction that not one gunman should be allowed to leave the town, and those who are armed and putting up resistance must be wiped out," Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin said after meeting Putin, Interfax news agency reported.

Buildings were reported to be on fire at the time of the attack. The Russian news agency TASS has reported that Britain, in the shape of a Foreign Office official, has condemned the attack. It claims that the BBC had added that only Chechen fighters, but also local gunmen, had taken part in the assault.

The BBC on its website said that a school and the cit airport had been caught up in the attacks. Negotiation were being mounted to free hostages taken at No 3 police station. An unidentified security official told the BBC that the reason for the attack had been the arrest of at least one radical extremist on Wednesday.

Forbes stated that the Council of Europe had also condemned the attacks. Rene van der Linden, the Council's president, extended his condolences and support to his counterpart Boris Gryzlov in the State DUma, Russia's lower house.

Nalchik has a population of 235,000, 90% of whom are Muslim. It is the regional capital of Kabardino-Balkaria.
