Russia: Jamaat Yarmuk - Islamist Terror Group
In response to the current crisis in Nalchik in the Russian Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, this is a brief report on the terror group Jamaat Yarmuk, who are believed responsible for the current attacks. We mentioned below that the Kavakacenter website had claimed Yarmuk Jamaat of Kabardino Balkaria was the group behind the attacks.
A report from the Eurasia Daily Monitor, from Jamestown.org, written on 28 January this year, that Jaamat Yarmuk had claimed responsibility for an attack upon the Regional branch of the Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) in Nalchik on Dec 14, which killed 14 people. On January 27 2005, a battle took place between Russian special forces, accompanied by armoured personel carriers, and people holed up in two apartments in Nalchik. After a two day stand off, seven people died in a shoot out, including three women. They women were, it was alleged, to be part of a suicide-bombing team. The militants had pretended there was an infant within during the start of the siege, which prevented the security forces from assaulting the scene. According to the Deputy Prosecutor, Nikolei Shepel, the body of Jamaat Ywrmuk, one Muslim Ataev, had been found amongst the dead.
30-year old Ataev was a former drug addict also known as "Dyavol", the "Devil", and "Seifulla" who had become recruited by the leader of a local group known as the "Wakhabis" in 1999. He learned terrorism skills in Vhechnya and Georgia. Fighting before the shoot-out in which Ataev was killed included gun battles in Ingushetia on Jan 8, and shoot outs with soldiers on Jan 15 in neighbouring Dagestan.
A report filed on Yahoo Messages from 29 September 2004, by local journalist Fatima Tlisova warned of the fears of imminent attack in Nalchik. Tlisova, a local Muslim, complained that normal Muslim citizens were being targetted by Russian security forces, while the Islamists were ready to target the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.
Marianna Kalmykove, a journalist and mother in Nalchik, has kept her son away from the town's school no 2 for several days now."I'm not the only one - everybody is waiting for a terrorist attack," she said. "Staff at the school are making all sorts of excuses in order to avoid officially admittting that there are no classes because of low attendance."
The name "Jamaat Yarmuk" derives from a battle in the early days of the Muslim advance upon the west. In 636, the Battle of Yarmuk (also Yamuq or Hieromyax) took place between the Muslim Arabs and the Byzantine Empire. The battle happened four years after the Prophet Mohammed died, and paved the way for further incursions of Islam into Christian Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia. Officially, the group Jamaat Yarmuk announced itself to the world in August last year, with a message to the peoples of Kabardino Balkaria:

We are not fighting against women or children, like Russian invaders are doing in Ichkeria.
We are not blowing up sleeping people, like FSB of the Russian Federation does.
We are stating that any terrorist acts that can happen in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria against peaceful civilians is the job of the Russian FSB and Kabardino-Balkarian pro-Russian police.
