Russia: Chechen Islamists Attack Town - Sixty Reported Dead
In an AFP report from Yahoo News, government buildings in the southern Russian town of Nalchik, in the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, were attacked by gunmen from neighbouring Chechnya. President Putin's special envoy to the region, Bmitry Kozak stated on national TV that the militants had taken hostages in a police station today.
About 150 gunmen launched the assault, according to the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass, and armoured vehicles and special forces troops were brought in. Fierce fighting has ensued, with 60 dead so far, most of them Chechen, but 12 local people are reported killed. There are dead and injured amongst security forces. Media reports give the number of assailants as 300.
Russian media announced that battles took place at a number of locations in the city, and in an echo of Beslan, children were seen fleeing from a school, near to one of the government buildings that was under siege. The gunmen were said to be dressed in conventional civilian clothing.
The Kavkazcenter web site stated that the gunmen came from the "Jaamat Yarmuk of Kabardino-Balkaria". This is believed to be an Islamist Chechen separatist group. Radio Free Europe in a report from one hour ago, stated that the assaults by Islamic militants began with a group of police being ambushed during the night, and then shooting erupted in various regions of Nalchik. The regional HQ buildings of the federal interior and security ministries were attacked, followed by the regional army recruitment center, the drugs-control office and the Interior ministry's anti-religious extremist department.
Fighting is continuing.
