Indonesia: Anger and Sorrow In Bali on Anniversary of 2002 Killings

Today, in a ceremony marking the third anniversary of the bombs which struck Bali three years ago, which killed 202 people, relatives and friend of the victims gathered on Bali to commemorate those who had perished. Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer was among the group assembled before the white marble memorial. Flags of 22 nations, representing the nationalities of the victims flew above. 88 of the victims were Australian, and in Sydney and Melbourne, similar services were held, according to the BBC. Today a crowd of 500 angry Balinese, dressed in sarongs and headbands attempted to storm the jail in which men involved with the 2002 bombings were held, Denpasar's Kerobokan jail. They removed one door from the prison before being blocked by police. Yesterday Amrozi and four others were moved to a more secure prison on the island of Nusakambangan, east of Java. The crowd were angered at the transfer of Amrozi, and as in yesterday's protests they called for those sentenced to death to be executed. 30 men have been convicted of the 2002 bombings. 19 of these are still held in detention on Bali.
