Bangladesh: Grave of Fatwa Victim Desecrated

A fatwa had been pronounced against a woman from the village of Fakipara in Bangladesh upon her death, according to the Bangladesh Independent. Tohra, who was a widow, had three children. Apparently while she had been married she had engaged in extra-marital affairs, which some say had caused her former husband, Javed, to commit suicide two years ago. Tohra had fallen in love with a man called Mostafa of Sidhair village. She had become pregnant, but the man refused to marry her.

When she finally gave birth, both she and her child died during the labour. Tohra and her child were buried in the same grave, according to the fatwa given by the headman of the village. Like Javed, her husband who had committed suicide, Tohra and her baby were buried without "janaja" the religious rites normally accorded to Muslim funerals.

When local newspapers announced the burial of the mother and child in the same grave, the grave was exhumed. The child's body was taken from the grave, placed inside an earthenware pot, and dumped beside a pond.
