Congo: Hutus from Rwanda Massacre 24 Villagers
In 1994 Rwanda descended into a bloodbath of killings and reprisals which took the form of indiscriminate massacres, between Hutus and Tutsis, with the problems crossing into neighbouring Burundi, where the same ethnic groups also live.
News today from the Telegraph, Hutu rebels who fled from Rwanda have indulged in a massacre of 24 villagers in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Wielding machetes, a group calling themselves the "Rastas" attacked wo hamlets in the mountainous South Kivu province, and slaughtered 15, wounding 12. District officials announced a further nine fatalaties. Several victims of the "Rastas" were children. The Rastas emerged after other Hutu rebels in Congo agreed to laying down arms in March.
Reuters Alertnet broke the news of the massacre on Monday 10th. The group left letters at the scene written in Lingala and Swahili claimed the attacks in the name of the Rastas. During the 1990s, the presence of the Hutu rebels in Congo led to invasions, leading to two major conflicts. 17,000 UN troops are stationed in the Congo, but the country is huge, and most troops have been deployed protecting the organisation of Congo's first democratic elections for 40 years.
