Bangladesh: Islamist Reveals 20 Accomplices' Identities
Abu Taleb Ansari (Babul Ansari), the security official of the Bangladesh Parliament house who was arrested on Monday, has named 20 people close to him in his chain of command. These figures worked at district levels across Bangladesh. Abu Taleb is suspected of having raised 500 followers. In a report by the Bangladesh Independent he denies, however, having any involvement with the national bombings which happened on August 17.
On Tuesday, police seeking those involved with Aug 17's serial bombings raided an Islamist hideout in Rajshahi district, where detonators and bomb-making equipment was recovered. According to the Daily Star jihadist literature from Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, electronic circuits, and a diary were also taken in the seizure, which happened in the Baliapukur area. The literature was written by Ghulam Azam, the leader of JMB and also Professor Ruhul Amin. The notebook taken belonged to Madina University scholar Abdul Gafur al Madini.
The Daily Star also stated that Siddiqui Islam (aka Bangla Bhai) has handed over control of Jama'at-ul-Muhahideen Bangladesh (the organisation which claimed to be behind the Aug 17 attacks) to Abdul Awal, the son in law of JMB chief Abdur Rahman. Abdul Awul will now act as operations commander of the Islamist unit.
In Khulna, the deputy inspector of police had his life threatened in a letter, which also threatened local journalists with death. "You will be execued if you do not stop arresting our men and celebration of puja," the letter read. Durga Puja is a Hindu festival celebrating the goddess Durga. Several idols of Durga have recently been vandalised.
"You are our Muslim brothers, so do not arrest our men to protect the non-Muslims," says the letter claiming to be issued by "White House (Bandakati), Bangla Bhai, Ahle Hadith and Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh."The Bangladesh Independent reports that on Tuesday, nine militants arrested in connection with the Aug 17 bomb attacks were acquitted by the district and sessions judge of Joypurhat. The court also issued a warrant for 8 other suspects to be arraigned. They include at least one teacher at a madrassa, a Mr Hafizar Hasan. The letter says no Hindu worship or fair will be allowed in the division.
Yesterday, the Bangladesh Independent eported that another threat had been made against the judiciary, in a letter apparently sent by Ja'amat-ul-Mujahideen. District and sessions judge at Munshiganj, M Ali Mansur was told that his court would be blown up at some point during Ramadan. The letter also demanded an establishment of Shariah law.
