UK: Christians Plan Koran Ban

A group of Evangelical Christians has vowed that they intend to ban the Koran from being on sale in British shops, under the terms of the new Incitement to Religious Hatred Act which is currently awaiting ratification, according to today's Guardian.

The law was introduced at the behest of Britain's controversial Muslim Council for Britain, and though it passed its first step to legislation, being passed at the House of Commons, it has yet to be fully ratified by the House of lords. Yesterday, as members of the House of Lords were discussing this late stage in the law's passage onto the statute books, a group of 1000 people protested outside the Lords. Among the protesters were representatives from Christian Voice.

Christian Voice made headlines earlier this year when they tried to prevent the BBC from showing the controversial musical, "Jerry Springer: The Opera", on the ground that it was blashphemous. They failed in that exercise. Now they are ready to enter another fray. Stephen Green, director of Christian Voice has said his organisation would, should the new law be passed in the House of Lords, take out prosecutions against shops selling the Koran. He stated:

"If the Qur'an is not hate speech, I don't know what is. We will report staff who sell it. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that unbelievers must be killed."
Yesterday representatives of the Catholic Church expressed concerns about the wording of the new bill, and some Anglican bishops have agreed. The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Caret has said the law "threatens civil liberties". The Bishop of Winchester and the former Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay have concurred.
