Thailand Malaysia: Dispute over Muslim Refugees May be Resolving
In a report today from the Vietnam News Agency, Wan Mohammad, the adviser to the Thai Prime Minister has announced that he will be meeting Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Malaysian PM, on Oct 17. Mr Mohammed, who was formerly Thailand's Minister for Internal Affairs, is expected to try to bring a resolution to the dispute between the two countries, over the fate of 131 Thai Muslims who fled across the border into Malaysia on August 30.
Meanwhile, in the troubled south of Thailand, a Muslim woman has been shot dead, according to the Borneo Bulletin in what appears to be a sectarian attack. Wanna Nooklab was at home having dinner with her son in Muang district, Pattani province. Two men arrived with guns and opened fire. 43-year old Wanna was killed, and her son injured. Ms Nooklab was formerly an employee of a Southern Border Provinces' job creation scheme. Since January 2004, nearly 1,000 people have been killed in the violence in Thailand's southern provinces.
