UK: Guantanamo Detainee Seeks UK Citizenship
In a story from today's Times, a detainee at Guantanamo Bay has requested British citizenship. The man, 30-yr old David Hicks, is officially Australian, but his mother was born in Croydon, South London. Legally there are no reasons to prevent him gaining citizenship, but his solicitors have hinted that the UK government is not acting speedily, while there is a risk of spoiling UK/US relations.
Hicks fought for the Kosovo Liberation Army and also in Kashmir before arriving in Afghanistan in 2001. He converted to Islam but is said to be lax in his faith, and one compatriot has said he is "looking for adventure". Even though the British government has secured an agreement, that will soon see the evacuation of UK citizens detained at Guantanamo, the Australian government has no objections to Hicks facing a US military tribunal. He will be tried next month.
His charges will include: conspiracy to help al-Qaeda, aiding the enemy, and attempted murder of coalition forces during the Afghan conflict.
Personally I think people like this, who go into war zones ostensibly to support a people's cause should be sent back to those war-zones and plead their case to be allowed citizenship there. If you're prepared to fight for a country other than your own, then live where your "principles" take you, if you have any. I don't want your type in Britain. You fight against our allies and then try to renounce your own citizenship, to avoid paying the price for your folly. Take your punishment like a man, or f*ck off to plead your case with Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan.
