Trinidad: British-Bound Muslim Held at Airport

A Trinidadian, who lives in South London, was detained as he tried to board an aircraft bound for Britain. Two phials of powder were found in the bag of Omar Mohammad during a search. Scotland Yard have been informed of the arrest, states the Times. Mr Mohammad was arrested while police in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating three bombings which happened in the capital, Port of Spain in July. Police are in a state of high alert, following warnings from FBI of an imminent fourth bombing.

Police confirmed that Mr Mohammad was detained under the country's Prevention of Terrorism Act. Mohammad's 71 year old grandmother had her house searched and a computer and other materials were taken away for investigation. Zalika Mohammad said her grandson had been in Trinidad for three months and was not linked to Muslim extremists. She said her grandson had married an island woman two weeks previously and had stayed at a house belonging to his father's employers.

She said: "Around 11pm they came pounding on the door. I get up and saw my grandson with the police. He said 'grandma, they open up my suitcase and take the 'surma' and Epsom salts'." Surma is a cosmetic used as an eyeliner.

15% of the population of the country of Trinidad and Tobago is Muslim. In 1990 there was an attempt by militants to form an islamic state there. Groups active on the island include Waajihatul Islaamiyah (the Islamic Front), who support Osama bin Laden, Jama'at al Muslimeen (JAM) and the Jamaat al Murabiteen, according to a report compiled by the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security.
