Vatican: Catholic Bishop Condemns Muslim Countries' Intolerance
In a report today from the Middle East Times, a Roman Catholic bishop has said in a Vatican synod that Muslim countries were not allowing Christians to practice their faith.
Ethiopian Archbishop Nerganeyesus Souraphiel gave examples of people from his own country and Eritrea, where guest workers in Arab countries were denied the ability to practice Christianity. The countries he named were Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the Gulf States, in an address to 240 bishops at the Vatican, who were discussing international issues.
He stated that before leaving to work in Muslim countries, the guest workers were forced to change their names to Muslim names, and the women have to dress in Islamic clothing.
"Once they have reached their destination, they have their passports taken away and are subjected to every kind of abuse and oppression. In this situation many are forced to become Muslims," according to a text of the prelate's speech released to Italian journalists.Archbishop Souraphiel stated that the workers are forced to seek employment abroad because of poverty at home, and because other Christian countries do not allow them to work. The workers were denied rights to practice Mass and Holy Communion. "It's modern day religious persecution."
Recently, Condoleeza Rice announced that Saudi Arabia, which has the strictest bars against non-Muslims practicing their faith, would have a 180 day waiver from threat of potential US sanctions, to allow it more time to comply with the US Religious Freedom Act.
