US: Letter from Al-Qaeda Warns Against Muslim Alienation
We referred briefly on Saturday 8th to a letter sent by Ayman Zawahiri (pictured), which was sent to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, but intercepted by US. Today, the BBC has more details of this letter.
Sent by Zawahiri, who is Al Qaeda's second in command, and who recently said that Britain would receive "punishment" for its involvement in Iraq, the letter was written in Arabic, according to Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman. He did not give details of how it was obtained, but stated that it was authentic and recent.
"Zawahiri says that they've lost many of their key leaders and that they've virtually resigned themselves to defeat in Afghanistan, that their lines of communication and funding have been severely disrupted," Mr Whitman told reporters on Thursday."Zawahiri, an Egyptian-born former eye specialist, wrote in the letter that tactics of killing hostages and bombing of mosques would alienate Muslim masses. Zawahiri claimed that the eventual governance of Iraq must include those Muslim masses, and therefore should not be alienated. The letter wrote of the strategy of Muslim extremists to create an Islamic state based in Iraq, which could expand into neighbouring countries.
Reuters stated that the missive also contained a request for financial support. The New York Times added that the 6,000 word letter was dated from July and was obtained by US intelligence in Iraq. The message contained in the letter did not prevent the bombing of a mosque in Hilla, Iraq on Thursday, which according to Reuters killed 25 people and wounded 79.
