UK: Islamist Terror Suspects - Update
In a follow-up to the news that 10 men were arrested on Saturday, today's Independent has a few more details of their suspected links with the Iraqi insurgency.
The reported links with Al-Zarqawi have been dismissed by security and counter-terrorism services. The men, who were taken from Croydon (south London), Derby and Wolverhampton, are thought to be held under a wider policy of detaining people before they carry out any planned terrorist actions. There are no suggestions that the men are linked to the 7/7 bombing incident, nor to the failed suicide attacks which took place on July 21.
A spokeswoman from Scotland Yard said that the men were being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, under the Terrorism Act 2000 and were being questioned by detectives as part of an "intelligence-led investigation".Searches continued at the men's addresses, and are said to continue for "some time". Neighbours of the house in Wolverhampton have said the individuals who lived there were quiet, but an unusually high amount of cars and vans would often be parked there, often blocking the street.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "There was always activity in the early hours of the morning. Men would be carrying plastic bags and packages to and from the house."Under the terms of the Terrorism Act 2002, the men can only be held for fourteen days without being formally charged with an offense.
