Pakistan: Islamist Camps Wiped Out by Earthquake

In what is turning out to be one of the most horrific earthquakes in the region within living memory, Pakistan has one piece of good news. It is reported in today's Telegraph that training camps used by jihadists battling against India over the disputed territory of Kashmir have been buried by landslides or left ruined by the quake. According to security officials, at least 15 militant training camps have been destroyed.

Security analysts, the Telegraph claims, have said that the quake had "significantly depreciated" the capacity of militant insurgents to keep on their fight for independence in the neighbouring Indian-administered state of Kashmir.

"The militant groups and their army handlers will now be totally absorbed in relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts,'' said Arun Sahgal, of the United Service Institution in New Delhi.
Senior Indian officials have claimed the existence of at least 55 militant training camps in the region. Unfortunately one legal military outpost was destroyed in the earthquake, when an estimated 1,000 Pakistani soldiers were crushed in the concrete bunkers which housed them. In one incident, the Pakistani army told visiting Jammu and Kashmir Governor S. K. Sinha that 12 soldiers had been swept 30,000 feet down in a gorge in a landslide, and the bodies had not been recovered, according to Pakistan's Daily Times.

The sad death toll continues to rise in Pakistan, which has seen the most devastation from Saturday's earthquake, whose effects were felt in Afghanistan and India. The estimates for loss of life have now gone above 30,000. Relations between India and Pakistan appear to have softened as both governments appreciate the human cost of the disaster. The Telegraph states that one Indian soldier who had accidentally crossed into Pakistani territory was allowed to return yesterday, "an unthinkable gesture in the past". The soldier, according to the Daily Times had been returned by Pakistanis in the Tangdar section after crossing the border in confusion.
