UK: Al Qaeda Plot to Attack Heathrow Airport
A plot hatched by Al Qaeda, and taken seriously by MI5 and government, has been revealed today, according to the Sunday Times. Following from Washington's lead in announcing 10 foiled Al-Qaeda plots, the UK government allowed details of this particular one to be made public. It explains too, why in 2003 tanks and 450 soldiers were stationed at Heathrow Airport.
MI5 received details of a plot to attack Heathrow with a hijacked passenger plane, which was to have been flown into one of the terminals, in February 2003. The second part of the plot involved the firing of mortars at a passenger plane.
An Al-Qaeda cell had been noticed carrying out reconnaissance at an airport in eastern Europe. The idea, it appears, was to have hijacked a plane from an airport which did not have tight security. Regarding the proposed mortar attack, the recently convicted terrorist and Muslim convert Andrew Rowe had been linked to the plot, which had led to him being under the surveillance which led to his arrest and subsequent conviction. He was found with detailed instructions on firing a mortar.
The Sunday Times last year revealed transcripts of interrogation of an Al-Qaeda operative, named "Mohammed", from Pakistani sources. In these, there was mention of how the original plot for 9/11 had involved hijacking not four, but ten planes, which were to be aimed at targets on the West Coast of the US, as well as the East. In the transcripts of his interrogation, Mohammed had also mentioned an attack upon Heathrow Airport.
