UK: More Attacks on Clarke's Anti-Terror Legislation
We brought you below a commentary on the criticisms facing Charles Clarke's new Anti-Terrorism Bill, due to be finalised this coming week. Now two new criticisms are being lodged against the upcoming legislation.
Firstly, the most senior legal adviser to Tony Blair, Lord Goldsmith, the Attorney General is displeased. He has apparently told Charles Clarke that it is not right for suspects to be detained for up to 90 days. His views are similar to those expressed below by two retired Law Lords, Lord Lloyd of Berwick and Lord Steyn.
Recently, Lord Goldsmith wrote to Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, to voice his views on the terror Bill. His disapproval, states the Sunday Independent will seriously embarrass the Government and could "throw its plans to crack down on terrorism into disarray". Goldsmiths doubts are said to be shared by other government ministers and chief figures in the Home Office.
The other prong of recent attack comes from three former jurors, who were involved in the so called "ricin trial", where four Algerian terror suspects were acquitted. The report comes from today's Observer. The jurors, who will be talking on a BBC Panorama documentary tonight, have expressed their anger that, despite being acquitted, the Algerians are now in detention, awaiting deportation.
One juror, speaking anonymously, told the programme: 'Before the trial I had a lot of faith in the authorities to be making the right decisions on my behalf ... having been through this trial I'm very sceptical now as to the real reasons why this new legislation is being pushed through.'The original "ricin trial" happened in December 2002, but at the Wood green apartment where the four men lived, no ricin was found. The only suspect who was convicted of plotting to use ricin as a toxic agent was Kamel Bourgass. He was already convicted at the time of the case for the murder of Detective Constable Stephen Oake, whom Bourgass stabbed while being arrested.
