Iraq: Islamic "Converts to Peace" Take Up Arms
Three years ago, a Yemeni scholar, Judge Hamoud al-Hitar, began a pioneering scheme, "reeducating" violent Islamist extremists with a "peaceful" Koranic approach to Islam. His techniques involved having prisoners quote texts from the Koran at each other. His methods appeared so successful that the UK government even invited him twice to lecture anti-terrorism officers at Scotland Yard, says the Sunday Telegraph.
However, his techniques have now come under suspicion, after claims that some of his "peace converts" are fighting again. Some al-Qaeda militants who went through his reeducation process have been caught fighting coalition forces in Iraq.
Among those released is the former chief bodyguard of Osama bin Laden, Nasser Al-Bahri, who has admitted that his sessions with Judge al-Hitar did nothing to diminish his belief in the leader of al-Qaeda. Instead, he suggested that many militants simply pretended to repent to gain quick release from jail.In all, 364 people have been given parole under the scheme, which should have offered them the chance of a new life.
