Bangladesh: Civil Servant Questioned in Islamist Terror Swoops
We mentioned earlier that Mufti Abdul Hannan, the leader of Islamic terror group Harkatul Jihad, had been arrested on Sunday, and had made mention of government officials who had been supporting his cause. Today, a report from the Daily Star announces that one person in the government's employ has already been arrested. The detective branch (DB) of police in Dhaka, the capital, have been interrogating Abu Taleb Bulbul Ansari, who is assistant security officer of the parliament secretariat. He was taken on Monday from his Staff Quarters house, acting on a tip-off from an arrested Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh activist from Jessore, who claimed Taleb was the mastermind behind the blasts which happened on Aug 17. Taleb was suspended from his government post. Following Taleb's statement, two more JMB leaders were arrested in the capital.
More searches are being carried out in the region of Khulna, attempting to locate the hideout of a militant faction said to be near the Indian border on the coast. Criminals and contrabanders are known to inhabit these regions, and a senior Khulna policeman has stated that a link between Islamist extremists and "terrorist" brigands from the Sundarban islands cannot be ruled out. It is easy for criminals to escape detection here, as it has the world's largest mangrove forest. Searches are also being made in the regions of Thakurgaon and Netrakona, where five more suspected JMB members were arrested.
Meanwhile, judges are still living in a state of fear after courtroom blasts on Monday. In Pabna, Judge Mafizul Islam has received a death threat in a hand-written letter. The threat was made against the judge and his family, and also said that his court would be attacked by suicide bombers.
