UK: Police Need More Funds to Fight Terror

In a report from Reuters it is claimed that the police need more funds and resources to deal with the increased threat of terror attacks, following the 7/7 bombings on London Transport. Depity Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick told the BBC that the police force had made a request to the government.

"We need additional resources to provide more resilience around our ability to both capture intelligence about potential bombings in the future, but also to increase our resilience around our ability to investigate this sort of offence."

Paddick gave his approval to the new raft of anti-terror legislation, which proposes to extend the time that police can hold terror suspects from two weeks to three months.

In a separate article, from the Independent, two former law lords, Lord Steyn and Lord Lloyd of Berwick have called the new anti-terror proposals "intolerable". What galls them most is the issue of detaining suspects for three months. Speaking on a yet-to-be broadcast of a Panorama programme for the BBC, Lord Steyn said "We live in a country that Voltaire called 'the country of liberty'. Isn't that being endangered?"

Referring to the part of the bill which states that to "glorify, exalt or celebrate" an act of terrorism is to be a crime, Lord Lloyd stated: "I have never seen anything like it in an Act of Parliament. And I pity the poor judge who's going to have to explain those words to a jury. Glorify, there again glorify, exalt or celebrate.

"Presumably they all mean something different otherwise you wouldn't have three words instead of one. Somebody in the Home Office must have thought they mean something different. But how is a judge going to explain the difference between those three things ?

Well personally I think the former Law Lords are hypocrites. A person - any person - can be accused of a crime, and before undergoing trial can be remanded in custody to a prison. Remand prisoners can be kept for an indefinite period of time. One man from Hong Kong spent more than a decade in remand. Upon release, if found innocent, there are no legal mechanisms to compensate remand prisoners. So all I can say is that these fools did nothing to stop the injustices of remand prisoners when they had power, so why should anyone listen to them now?
