Belgium: Smurfs Killed - Smurf Village Annihilated in Bombing Raid!

In the most thrilling episode so far made of the Smurfs, the little blue fungus-dwelling folk are caught up in an air raid of dire dimensions.

The short film pulls no punches. It opens with the Smurfs dancing, hand-in-hand, around a campfire and singing the Smurf song. Bluebirds flutter past and rabbits gambol around their familiar village of mushroom- shaped houses until, without warning, bombs begin to rain from the sky.

Tiny Smurfs scatter and run in vain from the whistling bombs, before being felled by blast waves and fiery explosions. The final scene shows a scorched and tattered Baby Smurf sobbing inconsolably, surrounded by prone Smurfs.

The final frame bears the message: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."

This is an advertisement by Unicef, which is soon to appear on a television near you. In the UK it will only be broadcast after the 9pm watershed, when children are supposed to be tucked up in bed. According to the Telegraph, the advert was approved before his death by the Belgian artist Peyo who created the little blue bastards, and Unicef expect it to raise $10,000 for the rehabilitation of former child soldiers in Burundi. The account director for Publicis, the agency who made the film, wanted to have Smurfs without arms and legs, or a Smurf losing its head, but Unicef were spoilsports and said no.

Belgian viewers were treated to a preview of the 25 second long commercial when it was shown on the evening TV news. Reactions ranged from approval to shock, apparently, and for small children who inadvertently watched, "wailing terror".

So it is all for a good cause. Shame it didn't have a more real representation of war, with Smurfette offering to go down on members of the conquering army in exchange for milk tokens, but you can't have everything. Personally - I think someone should have bombed the little blue blighters years ago. However, I do sincerely hope this comercial does raise money for child victims of war.
