India: Special Treatment for Muslims in Andra Pradesh

In the Indian state of Andra Pradesh, Muslims are being treated to a taste of positive discrimination. The government has passed a law making it compulsory for five per cent of jobs and education places to be reserved for economically Muslims. The move, announced back in June, went onto the statute books on Wednesday 5th October. The bill was passed almost unanimously, apart from a walk-out by two mambers of the Bharatiya Janata Party, according to the BBC.

There are already reservations made or the lower classes, who have 25% of job and education alocations made out to them. The minister for the welfare of the lower classes, D. Srinivas, who introduced the bill, said that the new Muslim reservations would be an addition, not an inclusion, in existing required quotas.

The head of the Bharatiya Janata Party, G Kishan Reddy, said the move was a lure to get the Muslim vote, and that such reservation allocations were against the spirit of the constitution, which is secular. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or World Hindu Council also opposed the move. Out of Andra Pradesh's population of 78 million, 10% are Muslim.
