Pakistan: Muslims Pressure Witnesses of Church Rape of 13 Year Old Girl
Once again another case of rape of a Christian girl in Pakistan, and this time the event happened in a church, according to Pakistan Christian News. The girl, called Ruhksana was returning from a visit to her aunt to her home when she claims she was abducted at gunpoint. She was taken to the New Apostolic Church in Chak village in Bahawalpur, and there she was raped. Her calls for help brought villagers to the Church, who witnessed the event. The gunman, identified as an influential local Muslim, Mohammad Ahmed, aka Jeera, ran off, waving his gun aloft. Rukhsana was taken to hospital in Multan. The rape happened on August 30.
The local Pastor Binyamin has said that the police initially did not want to file a report, but eventually did register the case on September 3. Since this event, Pastor Binyami has had to leave the village with his family because, as a witness, he has been threatened and is in fear of his life. Influential Muslims in the village have approached Rukhsana's family, to prevent them from lodging reports.
Bishop Waris John of the region has called on the Governor, the chief minister for the Punjab and other agencies to urge protection for Pastor Binyamin and justice for Rukhsana. The case has been taken up by the Minorities Alliance, which for 25 years has tried to protect the rights of minority faiths. Julius Salik (pictured) of the Minorities Alliance has stated that the relevant agencies who should be involved in bringing justice to this case, and the government in particular, have had an ostrich-like attitude towards this and similar events.
