Pakistan: Mosque of "Heretical" Sect Attacked - Eight Dead

Eight people have been killed and fourteen more wounded in an attack upon a mosque earlier today, Paistan's interior minister Aftan Sherpao and police announced, according to Dawn. The attack, taking place on the second day of Ramadan, was carried out by three gunmen on motorcycles and two on foot. The mosque is in Mong village, a suburb of Mandi Bahauddin, which lies 100km (65 miles) south of Islamabad.

"The floor of the one-room place of worship was littered with blood," said Mohammed Sajid, who lives nearby. He said around 25 people were praying when the attack was made around 4.45 am.
A police spokesman said that two masked men entered the place of worship while a congregation was holding morning prayers. One of the injured was said to be in a critical condition.

A report in the Khaleej Times stated that the Ahmadi (Ahmadiyyah) community are Muslims with several thousand adherents in Pakistan, but in 1974 they were declared a "non-Muslim minority" in 1974 in Pakistan, as their beliefs are considered heretical. The Ahmadi community, also known as the Qadiani, has been a regular target of religious extremism. The shootings also coincided with the anniversary of Sunni militant leader Azam Tariq being assassinated in Islamabad two years ago. The Khaleej Times stated that there have been 4,000 lives lost in Pakistan over the past deade as a result of religious violence.

We have reported below on how the Amadiyyah/Ahmadi have been attacked recently in Indonesia. In Bangladesh too, the sect has been threatened. According to Persecution.org, extremists there have said they intend to attack the Bangladeshi mosques on September 30, though so far these appear not to have taken place The Ahmadi/Amadiyyah are so called because they follow the teachings of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani (1835-1908), who is perceived by them as a Messiah and Prophet. It is this reverence for a Prophet that sticks in the craw of more orthodox Muslims, who claim that Mohammed was the last Prophet, and there shall be no others after him.
