Bangladesh: Jihadist "Organiser" of Courthouse Bombings Arrested

From the Friday 7 edition of the Bangladesh Independent, it has been announced that members of Jamaat -ul-Mujahideen have been arrested during a raid on a militant hide-out in Chandpur town. On August 17, when bombs ripped through all but one province of Bangladesh in one day, leaflets from Jamaat -ul-Mujahideen were left at each bomb site.

As reported in the Bangladesh Independent, the "sector commander" was among those apprehended. Ghalib, aged 24, was taken from a garage in the town and confessed to being the head of the JMB's operations in Chandpur, Comilla, Luxmipur and Noakhali areas. Ghalib's arrest came after Khankar Mahfuz (22) was arrested from his house in the village of Ponsoi in Kachua Upazilaon Wednesday.

Ghalib told interrogators that two secret camps of militants existed in the town, and from these he planned sunversive and Jihadi operations in Chandpur and neighbouring districts. He said that, under instructions from October 3 courthouse bombings which, in Chittagong and Laxmipur, claimed the life of one person and injured five. He also was instructed by JMB superiors to carry out the local bombings of the national August 17 offensive.

Ghalib - real name Shamin Hossain - was apparently shaking during interrogation. His arrest brings to seven the number of JMB operatives arrested in the district. Special teams were sent to Barura and Chandina neighbourhoods to pick up other JMB activists, based on Ghalib's information.

In separate incidents, law enforcers errested six more people from Joypurhat, Chandpur and Faridpur districts in the past 48 hours, suspecting them of JMB membership. A militant trainer was among those, who with three accomplices were connected with the August 17 serial bomb outrages.

Yesterday, trials began of JMB operatives began in Joypurhat on Thursday, at the court of the district and sessions judge. 20 appeared in court, with 8 charged in absentia while still fugitive. Judge Narendra Chandra Das refused bail and remended the 20 into custody, to return on October 11 for trial,

In Faridpur district two youths suspected of being JMB militans were detained in Narayandia and Hidadanga villages in Alfadanga Upazila. We have briefly described some of the current situation in Bangladesh. Within the next two days, we will be giving a fuller account in a Bangladesh Special Report.
