US: Bush Lambasts Islamists
President Bush has lashed out against Islamists, claiming that they are out to "enslave whole nations and intimate the world", adding that they have made Iraq their main front, according to Sign On San Diego, sourced from Associated Press. In a speech at the National Endowment for Democracy, Bush likened Islamists to communists, adding that they are being helped by elements of the Arab news media that "incites hatred and anti-semitism." His words, stronger on this issue than his earlier platitude of "Islam is a Religion of Peace", were given as home support for the war in Iraq dropped further, having now claimed 1940 servicefolk's lives.
"The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia," Bush said. The president has been stepping up his defense of his Iraq policy in the face of declining public support for the war and a crucial test in Iraq with the Oct. 15 constitutional referendum.
