Canada: Ottowa's No-Fly List to be Challenged by Muslim Group
Back in early August, Canada's Federal Transport Minister, Jean Lapierre, announced that he would be introducing a "no-fly" list of airline passengers in a package of security measures that Ottowa needed to strengthen safety on Canada's transportation systems. No more than 1000 were to be put on the list. Canada had already spent $1 billion on bomb detection equipment at airports. The list, when announced, brought the usual civil libertarian objections. The no-fly list is scheduled to be brought in next year.
Now, according to the Globe and Mail, the no-fly list, which seeks to stop suspicious or threatening individuals from boarding Canadian planes, has come under attack from a Muslim group. The Canadian Islamic Congress has concerns that the list would be used to exclude Muslim pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for next year's Haj.
The national Islamic group has asked any Muslims who have been stopped at Canadian airports to come forward with the hopes of launching a legal challenge against the no fly list. CIC president, Mohamed Elmasry wants to know "how people on the list would be notified, how long they would stay on it and how names could be removed". Jean Lapierre (pictured) said the list,
to be developed with the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, would name only those who pose "an immediate threat to aviation security."What more can I say, other than why wait until 2006? Is Canada somehow thinking that it is "immune" from Islamist attacks until then? And CIC are just thinking about Muslim issues, not the need for national security. Typical.
