UK: Islamic Cleric Abu Qatada Breached UK Control Order
Radical cleric Abu Qatada, who has been described as "al Qaeda's representative in Europe", is being investigated for suspected breaches made on an earlier control order, according to the Times. Currently in detention under Charles Clarke's new rules, at the time of the 7/7 bombings, Qatada was under house arrest. Strictures placed upon him included not having a mobile or computer modem. A mobile phone and modem were found at his house this summer, and he is believed to have been consorting with Islamists, again breaching the rules of his control order.
Qatada had formerly been detained at Belmarsh prison under directives from the former Home Secretary David Blunkett, but lawyers argued for the release of Qatada and other detainees, citing human rights violations. Now imprisoned under Clarke's Immigration Act, Jordanian-born Abu Qatada was seeking bail at a Special Immigrant Appeals Commission. At this hearing, Ben Emmerson QC was representing Qatada and six other detainees.
The mobile phone and computer modem were discovered in June during a search by Scotland Yard. Qatada caimed the mobile phone belonged to one of his five children. At the time of Qatada's rearrest on August 11, police were carrying out forensic research of his computer.
Qatada, real name Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman, has currently, according to the Home Office, a very real risk of absconding if released on bail, now that an agreement (to prevent torture and capital punishment against him) had been made with Jordan. The other detainees at the bail hearing were also suspected of performing credit card frauds to fund Islamist operations in Chechnya.
