Pakistan: Mullah is Mad About the Boy
A Pashtun tribesman from the Khyber Agency, 50 miles north of Peshawar, has found his marriage has cost him a lot more than the price of the reception. 42 year old Liaquat Ali's marriage ceremony, or walima, was planned as a public affair, with a troupe of hired singers to serenade him and his beautiful young bride, and was held in his home village of Nangrosa. What might have been a blissful event has been marred by the news that for engaging in such a public wedding with his 16 year old sweetheart he could now face summary execution. Why should this be? The answer is that Liaquat's bride is a boy.
Sadly for Liaquat, no-one seemed to understand. He had paid the impoverished parents of Markeen Afridi a handsome sum of $600 for the hand of their offspring, so it was all above board. Some of his wedding guests were too shocked to partake of the food and went home. An emergency jirga or tribal meeting was held. One elder, Haji Namdar had returned from a year long pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, and has imposed a Taliban-style law on morality in the region. Milat Khan Afridi, aged 56, another elder, said he would be advocating the death penalty for Liaquat and Markeen, because "they had held up the reputation of Islam and the tribe to ridicule and contempt."
The jirga is still debating the outcome. The options include burning the couple's houses down, executing them in some awful sharia fashion, or expelling them from the area with a heavy fine. Millat Khan says they deserve death, according to the Telegraph.
I say they deserve a honeymoon. The BBC mentions that a gay couple caught having sex in the Khyber region were lashed publicly in May this year.
Although it remains a taboo subject, homosexuality is relatively common in Pakistan, says the BBC's correspondent Aamer Ahmed Khan in Islamabad.Increasingly, gay couples are living together in some of the big cities such as Karachi and Islamabad, but gay marriages remain unheard of, he says.
