UK: Britain Accuses Iran of Arming Shiite Insurgents

Accusations were made today by Britain against Iran, claiming that the state was supplying militants with necessary skills to manufacture armour-piercing bombs, used to kill UK troops. The UK also Hizbollah of Lebanon of involvement.

Unlike the insurgents led by the likes of Al-Zarqawi, who are predominantly Sunni, those supported by Hizbollah are a Shiite faction, and are believed to have learned how to make "shaped charges" from Iranian instructors. Recent bomb attacks by Shiites upon British troops had shown that these newer explosives could rip through armour and needed infrared controls. A UK Ministry of Defence spokesman stated that since May, 8 UK soldiers had been killed by roadside bombs.

There is no evidence of a direct link to Iran, but there has long been a suspicion by the US and UK that Iran has been fomenting unrest within Iraq.

Iranian representatives strongly denied the accusations.

"The stability of Iraq is of paramount importance to Iran," a statement from the Iranian embassy in London said.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always taken position against insurgency and violence in Iraq."

This evening, the issue was hotly debated on BBC television news, and seems to be causing some embarrassment to diplomats from both UK and Iranian sides.
