Bangladesh: Courthouses Bombed by Islamists

After the bombings in Bangladesh on August 17, which happened in 63 of the country's 64 districts, killing two people, there has now been another wave of bomb attacks, according to Reuters. The attacks took place on Monday 3rd October in courthouses in three towns, killing two and injuring 15, including a judge.

It is suspected that following the massive wave of arrests of hundreds of people suspected of involvement in the August bombing, with many of these now awaiting trial, it appears the militants were trying to send a message. The bombings of August 17 were the work mainly of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, who wish for an Islamic state to be formed with sharia as its main source of guidance.

On Saturday, a leading Islamist, Mufti Abdul Hannan, apparently the leader of Harkatul Jihad and viewd as a "top terrorist" by Bangladesh police, had been arrested. On Sunday in Jaipurhat,, 28 Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen members were were formally charged by police, and it is possible that these two events triggered the explosions on Monday. The local paper in Sangbad claimed that some of the individuals arrested after Monday's bombings had said under interrogation that Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen had chosen to attack the judiciary to put pressure on the country to enact Sharia laws.

One new tactic employed in Monday's bombings was to conceal explosives inside books. Previously they had used plastic or metal boxes, stated a police spokesman.
