Thailand: Islamic Militants Decapitate Victim
In a brief report from Ynet,News, the body of a beheaded Thai villager has been found in Southern Thailand on the eve of Ramadan. This brings to 11 the number of decapitations in the last 21 months. The man's head and torso were found in two separate fertiliser bags, dumped beside the road at a rubber plantation in Yala. The man was estimated to be in his 50s. His murder coincided with the eve of Ramadan. A note was found by the body, claiming the man had been killed in retaliation for police actions.
Recent violence in Yala included a policemen being killed and several injured in an organised assault on a convoy, which happened three days after two Muslims were injured in shootings outside a mosque.
The Reuters article states that in an attack similar to the one launched against the police convoy last week, (in which the road had been scattered with spikes, and trees cut down and used as barricades to block access to the victims), five soldiers were also attacked on Ramadan eve, at a military outpost, and five guns were taken. The soldiers were wounded. Again, spikes were scattered in the road and trees chopped down to barricade access to the scene.
These actions signal a new tacic for the Islamic insurgents, who are increasingly using guerilla tactics and booby traps to claim victims. Villagers had reported the decapitated man's body on Tuesday, but it was only earlier today that police recovered the cadaver. There had been fears, understandable in the context of recent events, that the scene had been booby-trapped.
The violence in the present insurgence has been connected with three southern states, whose inhabitants are mainly ethnic Malays. A century ago, Bangkok annexed this region from neighbouring Malaysia. Many militant Islamists want to see the establishment of an Islamist state in the region. An update from the Vietnam News Agency claims the soldiers were killed, not wounded:
On Oct. 5, the first day of Ramadan, suspected Islamic insurgents attacked a military outpost in Jor-ai Rong district, in the southern Narathiwat province of Thailand, killing five soldiers and injuring two others, local sources said.The Islamic gunmen, riding in a pickup truck and on motorcycles, fired at the soldiers as they were eating dinner.
