Pakistan: Taliban's Spokesperson Arrested
In breaking news from the Times and Reuters, Pakistani authorities have announced that they have finally arrested Mullah Abdul Latif Hakimi, the primary spokesperson for Afghanistan's Taliban. Long suspected to have been in hiding in Pakistan, from where he made his announcements about Taliban activities, using a satellite telephone to relay his messages to the world's press, Hakimi was at last found in the country.
He was taken a few hours ago, and according to Pakistan's Interior Minister, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, "more details will come later."
In the past Hakimi often claimed responsibility for attacks upon US-led coalition forces. If you type his name into Google, he is always the messenger quoted. For example, in a report from CNN from January 21 this year, concerning the northern Afghan warlord Dostum, he reports an incident, but uses it as an opportunity to threaten lives:
"Thousands of Taliban had surrendered, but Dostum and his men killed them," Latifi said in a satellite telephone call from an undisclosed location. "We will attack any Afghans who are allies of the Americans or the present government."Often Hakimi's reports were laden with hyperbole, but sometimes they were deadly accurate. He was picked up, according to Pakistan's Information Minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, in Baluchistan province, which lays alongside the Afghanistan border. "It is a big success," he said. "We have been looking for him for a long time.". Ahmed refused to say whether or not Hakimi would be handed over to US representatives. "We will interrogate him and see."
