EU: Turkish Ex-Diplomat to Lecture Human Rights Forum
The Chairman of the OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu was today scheduled to address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Europe's leading forum monitoring human rights, it was reported in Radio Free Europe's website. So who is Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu? Voted by secret ballot to be chairman of the OIC in 2004, he is by Islamic standards a moderate, with an impressive Curriculum Vitae. According to the BBC, Egyptian-born Ihsanoglu promised to "re-energise" the OIC with administrative changes.
Mr Ihsanoglu has called for collective action by Islamic countries to combat religious extremism. He wants a greater role for Muslim nations in international affairs, including permanent representation in the UN Security Council.A former Turkish diplomat, he wrote an address to the UN HQ in New York on 16 September, in which he agreed with Security Council resolution 1624(2005) adopted on the 14 September calling upon States to adopt measures to prohibit, by law, incitement to commit terrorist acts.
Yet, terrorism needs to be defined. To be equitable, any definition of terrorism should include State terrorism, and should not prejudice the rights of people struggling for their self-determination or under foreign occupation to resistance. I would like to emphasize, in this regard, that the sanctity of life is one of the paramount values of Islam and that terrorism is a heretical deviation of the religion. We believe that frequent placing of the prefix of "Islam" before "terrorism" is a sacrilege. Moreover, it is highly dangerous. We should be careful not to create a perception that might lead to bitter enmity, based on religious grounds, between hundreds of millions of people. Muslims around the world have never been under such a pressure and intensive scrutiny placed on them. What we need is a concerted effort to quell this phenomenon in greater understanding and in an open, critical, and transcultural dialogue among all civilizations. He still regards Israel as an "occupying force." He clearly has not read is Koran or Hadith if he thinks Islam is non-violent. What is he doing lecturing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe?
