UK: 7/7 Bomb Victims Receive First Compensation

Finally, victims of London's Islamist bombings will receive their first compensation. There was an outcry at the start of last week, according to the Times when it was revealed that nine weeks after the 7/7 attacks, no victims had received any compensation. Chancellor Gordon Brown had set aside 10 million pounds specifically for these victims and their families, and Tony Blair made a personal pledge to ensure the money came through. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority stated: "We are working as fast as we can and we'll be making our first interim payments within two or three weeks."

Now, in a press release made nine hours ago by Reuters it is revealed that some initial payments have been made. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority sent its first two cheques yesterday and has made offers in all to 22 victims, of an amount totalling 400,000 pounds. These offers were interim payments and not final. So far they have received 209 claims, but expect more, perhaps 10 times that figure. Howard Webber, the CICA head, told the BBC

"Anyone who was on one of the trains involved in the bombings, or in the Tavistock Square area where the bomb went off on the bus and who suffered mental injury and who feared they were going to suffer physical injury, we believe would be eligible for compensation."

He defended the delays, saying that many checks have to be made before payments can be awarded. Of the first 209 applications, 92 police reports have so far been received. He added that the first police reports arrived less than a fortnight ago, which is why the first payments have now been offered.
