UK: Ramadan Arrives At Oxford University

For many Muslims, particularly the young, 43-year old Tariq Ramadan is one of the most popular Islamic scholars there is. He is the grandson of Hassan al-Banna, founder of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood. He courts controversy easily. He is banned from entering the United States, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Egypt, cited as an extremist, yet in Time Magazine last year, he was selected as one of the world's top 100 thinkers. Earlier this year, he came to Britain from Geneva, where he lives with his wife of 20 years and his four children, to be a part of a UK Home Office taskforce to tackle extremism in Muslim youth.

This enigmatic man has been given a Fellowship at St Andrews College, Oxford University. To coincide with his uptake of this appointment, the Guardian has an extremely hagiographic account of the man, who is planning to write a book on Islam and Europe. He had thorough religious training in his teens while in Egypt, but in Switzerland gained two PhD's, one in Islam, the other Nietzche.

His contradictory statements about Islam have riled many. He is widely accused of anti-semitism. Mike Whine, a member of British Board of Jewish Deputies, and the Jewish Community Security Trust has stated "He speaks with two voices, one for his European audience which appears moderate, and one for his Arab hinterland where he voices many of the demands of Islamists...He is at the soft end of the Islamist extreme spectrum." Should you read the Guardian interview, one will find out that he likes pistachio ice-cream, and more besides.

He is a deeply controversial character in secular France, where he has an office and spends much of his time. "In France," he says, "they don't have a problem with Tariq Ramadan. They don't have a problem with Islam. They have a problem with religion." He has been accused of justifying suicide bombings. He maintains he has always absolutely condemned violence as anti-Islamic, but insists that he should be allowed to seek to explain. "To explain is not to justify," he says.
