France: Two Islamist Converts Arrested Today
This morning, French police arrested several islamist suspects today, mostly in the region of Montargis in Loiret, north central France. But the principle targets for the swoop were two men, one aged 25, the other 30, who had contacts with the radical Salafist, Safe Bourrada, who had been among the nine arrested at Trappes and Evreux on September 26.
The two key suspects among those who were arrested today had been under surveillance for two years. At least one of those arrested had admitted plotting to make terrorist attacks at Orly, one of Paris' three main airports, and other sensitive targets, according to French news site Nouvel Obs.
"My son has had no part in any Islamist movement," the father of the 30-year old detainee declared, while at the family residence near Chateaurenard. "I don't understand this. My son has got nothing to be ashamed about. We all became converts to Islam about three years ago. We are just content to pray."A friend of the detainee's sister claimed that the police had probably intervened because several of those arrested in the swoop on 26 September had come to dinner at the family's home.
On RTL, a radio statiion, this morning the French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, confirmed that the arrests made today were in connection with the same enquiry that led to last weeks arrests, aimed at dismantling the cell of Algerian born Safe Bourrada. "It is the pursuit of the same enquiry, it is the same cell", he said.
