Malaysia: Understanding an Old Snake

Former Malaysian PM Mahatir Mohammad is an old snake, a man who managed to create a moderate image while advancing the pan-Islamic cause. I'll first quote an article before explaining Mr. Mahatir's motivation: Attacks hurt Muslim 'cause', says Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia's former premier Mahathir Mohamad said Sunday the bombings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali were not helping what he called the Muslim cause.

"People will perceive Muslims as being very bad people but that is not Islam at all," Mahathir told reporters at the World Islamic Economic Forum here.

"We are against such wild attacks. There is no reason at all for doing that, and I think (the attackers) are not helping the cause," he said. But Mahathir, who is well known for his anti-Western rhetoric and who ruled Malaysia for 22 years until his retirement two years ago, suggested that a backlash against Muslims would serve little purpose.[...]

Did you catch the key word in that passage, dear reader? Let's quote the key sentence again, with the revealing word highlited:

"We are against such wild attacks."

So, it is not he is against attacks per se, he is only against wild ones. Ah, but you may say I'm reading too much into Mahatir's words. Normally I would agree with you, except he expressed the same thought in his infamous anti-semitic speech before the tenth Islamic summit (speech here.) In it, he urged a "strategic retreat", to build Islamic strenght before smashing the enemies of Islam, the "European and the Jews".

So, don't be fooled by "moderate" Mahathir. He just disagrees with the means, not the goals of the "extremist" terrorists. All of them should be defeated.
