UK: Five Suspects Arrested Today

Reuters today reported that in Britain, five people were arrested under the UK government's new anti-terrorism laws. The five people apprehended were all taken from one London address and will now be remanded until deportation. A Home Office spokeswoman said:

"The immigration service detained five individuals in accordance with the Home Secretary's powers to deport individuals whose presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good for reasons of national security."

The five individuals had been arrested at 5.00 am GMT, an hour or so before dawn. No further details are being made available at present.

The following upate is from the "Breaking News" pop-up secion of the Times for October 4:

Five suspected Islamic extremists were held in dawn raids and face being kicked out of the country as a threat to national security. Three were detained in the West Midlands, one in London and one in Cardiff in raids by the Immigration Service backed by Special Branch and the Anti-Terrorist Branch. The foreign nationals were detained using Home Secretary Charles Clarke's powers to deport those whose presence in the UK is deemed "not conducive to the public good".
