When facing intolerance against the German way of life, Franz Beckenbauer lets the Iranian Mullahs score: Beckenbauer gets crash course over Muslim teams' needs
TEHRAN (Reuters) - The glum faces of Iranian soccer officials during a film showing Germans guzzling beer and scoffing sausages was lesson one in Franz Beckenbauer's crash course in the needs of Muslim teams at the 2006 World Cup.The scene was in a promotional film shown by Beckenbauer, president of Germany's World Cup organising committee, at the start of his tour of the 31 countries that will play in the tournament next year.
"I will listen to the individual wishes of the Iranian federation in regard to the Islamic nature of the Iranian team," said Beckenbauer, who started his tour with the Muslim countries that have already qualified, including next stop Saudi Arabia.
The cultural differences were exposed quickly when pictures of beer and sausages in a glitzy promotional film for the 2006 facilities and cities reduced Iranian football federation officials to glum, stony-faced silence.
I have a proposal to Mr. Beckenbauer; to keep the Iranians happy, stop selling beer and pork products while the World Cup is going on, and let your new Muslim overlords raid an isolated German village so they can take sex slaves back to Iran. (A nice souvenir I'd say.) Failing that, apologize at every opportunity for being German.
P.S. Most incredibly of all, this is the same Franz Beckenbauer who was nicknamed 'the Kaiser' for his confident, powerful playing style. How the mighty have fallen!
