Iran: Totally Tolitarian, And Getting Worse
Today, more news of how the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is turning the clock further back to the evil days when Khomeini first ruled Iran. Iran Focus reports on the case of a group of young men, convicted of armed robbery. They were sentenced to jail terms of between two and seven years, and also made to pay fines. But each was forced to undergo a public flogging of 74 lashes each (pictured).
A woman who has protested her innocence during her trial, in which she was accused of murdering the wife of an Iranian football star, has been sentenced to death and faces imminent execution. And during Ramadan, no-one is allowed to eat in public, according to Brigadier General Morteza Talai. Talai has said anyone breaking the fast will be immediately arrested and handed over to the judiciary for prosecution. Previous infringements of Ramadan restrictions have resulted in public floggings and jail sentences.
And even though the defendant lives in America, a dissident has been tried in absentia on charges of trying to "topple the Islamic system", according to My Telus. Mohammad Mohsen Sazgara was given a 5 year jail sentence, and 5 years' deprivation of his social rights. His actual crime? He organised an internet referendum for Iranians to vote for their favourite political system. And last week, Ali Afshari, who is unfortunate enough to live in Iran, was sentenced to six years' jail and five years' social rights deprivation for producing anti-Islamist publicity and for activity favouring foreign groups. Afshari is a leader of the reformist student group, the Office for Fostering Unity.
