Saudi Arabia: Religious Freedoms During Ramadan? You Must be Joking..

We mentioned below that Saudi Arabia had been given a six month waiver on the US's Religious Freedom Act. One would have thought that having been exempted, an allowance which was made to give them more time to relax their religious totalitarianism, they would be starting to show a bit of flexibility with foreigners who are not of the Islamic persuasion. Not one bit of it. A brief press statement from UPI relates that the interior ministry of the country has warned that, in the upcoming month of Ramadan, any non-Muslim residents who are seen drinking, eating or smoking in public places during the daytime, will lose their jobs and be deported. About 7 million foreign residents live and work in Saudi Arabia. Most of these are non-Muslims from East Asian countries. So much for Condoleeza Rice giving this Islamocentric state a bit more time. When six months are up I wonder what, if any, concessions the House of Saud will have made to encourage religious freedom?
