UK: More BBC Mudslinging From the MBC
Long ago, when this site was in its infancy, the BBC produced a documentary about Islam in Britain, and reactions amongst UK muslims to extremism, particularly since 7/7. The programme, on the Panorama thread, was entitled "A Question of Leadership" and was broadcast on August 25 this year. Even before the programme was shown, Inayat Bunglawala of the Muslim Council for Britain (MCB) wrote an angry letter to the BBC, stating:
"It appears that the Panorama team is more interested in furthering a pro-Israeli agenda than assessing the work of Muslim organisations in the UK."The MCB, officially founded in 1997, has had a close relationship with the Blair government, and its secretary-general, Iqbal Sacranie, (pictured) was knighted by Blair.
The Panorama programme elicited more controversy from the MCB than from any other quarter, and though it was scheduled and broadcast more than a month ago, the MCB is still arguing hysterically about it. It seems that they believe that if they shout loud enough, they will appear to be in the right. In London, such tactics are called "Coming out wrong and strong". Today's Telegraph briefly mentions the new spat which has arisen.
Mike Robinson, the programme's editor, issued a rebuttal to a complaint by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) that the production was "dishonestly presented", "mischievously edited" and intended to malign "without regard for the facts"The MCB called the programme "a shoddy and Islamophobic piece of work which will contribute to furthering distrust". Robinson responded by calling on the MCB to withdraw "these false and malicious accusations" and asked the MCB to "desist from unwarranted and wildly inaccurate attacks on the honesty of our journalism." The argument is also described in yesterday's Guardian.
As we reported ourselves there were things revealed about the MCB shortly before the BBC broadcast which were true, such as the links MCB's affiliate members maintained with extremist groups, as independently noted by the Observer.
The BBC programme transcript can be found here. Perhaps you should read this in its entirety, and then read exactly how the current MCB argument has recently been treated by the BBC, and its overall report on the BBC Newswatch. Should you feel you still have any energy left, then you could do well to read The FULL TEXT OF PANORAMA'S RESPONSE TO THE MCB
