France: Suspected Islamists now "Under Investigation"

We brought you news of arrests of nine Islamists in France below. Today, it is announced in breaking news by Ireland OnLine that four of these suspects are now being put "under investigation", a step short of formal charges. The individuals comprise Safe Bourada, and three of his accomplices. In February 1998 Bourada was among 36 Islamists sentenced for providing logistical support for bomb attacks in Paris in 1995. He was given the maximum sentence then of 10 years' imprisonment, but gained early release in 2003. He has been under police surveillance ever since.

The four suspects have been questioned for the past four days. One of them had opened an internet cafe in Trappes, west of Paris. Some of the suspects had travelled to Lebanon in recent months, and Le Figaro newspaper claimed that these trips were to learn how to handle explosives. Bourada had travelled to Egypt in 2004, though his lawyer claims he had gone there to learn Arabic. The five other people arrested at the same time as those now "under investigation" have been released.
