Iraq: Sectarian Violence Grows
A report from today's Taipei Times claims more than 110 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in four car bombs. 25 of the dead were children. One car bomb in the southern town of Hilla, 95km south of Baghdad, exploded in a busy market, killing at least 12 and wounding 47. In the predominantly Shiite town of Balad, north of Baghdad, the death toll from three car bombs which went off on Thursday 29 September, rose to 98. At least 119 others were injured.
Aimed mainly at Shiite civilians, the Balad bombs started just before sunset, when the first bomb went off in a market crowded with people buying vegetables. The next happened meters away, and the third happened on a nearby street of clothing shops.
This sectarian violence is happening in the lead up to the October 15 referendum on the Iraqi constitution, which is opposed by most Sunni. Angry residents of Balad blamed "foreign fighters" for the atrocities.
"What have those Jordanians and Palestinians and Saudis got to do with us? Shame on them!" said Abu Waleed, a hotel owner who said seven people staying in his hotel died in the blasts.Five US soldiers were also killed, it was announced that day, in a bombing near Ramadi.
